‘Goats Initiate Phase 1’ at Candelaria Nature Preserve

Thanks to Source NM for sharing our most recent work at Candelaria Nature Preserve. You can find the article here!

As part of the effort to convert historic hay fields into a patchwork of wildlife habitats at Candelaria Nature Preserve, we recently added a herd of 120+ goats to our team of collaborators. Since May 2021, we have been implementing the first stages of the Resource Management Plan at CNP, and are excited to utilize goats for both weed management and the seeding of cover crops and native plant seeds as we transition fields to habitat. We expect to use goats as needed in the coming years to provide short duration control of introduced nonnative vegetation without the use of diesel-burning machinery.

Thanks also to our partners at Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District and City of Albuquerque. Funding for the goats (from Galloping Goat Grazing) is through the NM Department of Agriculture Healthy Soil Program and the NM Healthy Soil Working Group.
